The HR Shed Story (by Taimi Clinch)
I grew up in small business. When I was four I was entertaining the customers in our milkbar by singing on the milk crate. After a sexual harassment experience in my early working life where I had risen to the position of TV Producer by the age of just 22, my career deviated. I was terminated for not wishing to partake in the sexual advances of my boss. Subsequently I experienced the humiliation and trauma of going through an unfair dismissal case at a very early age. This negative experience changed my life. I embarked on a degree in Psychology and Human Resource Management at Swinburne University and found my passion. I didn't realise it at the time of my unfair dismissal, but I had entered the world of staff management. Who would have thought that I would go on to help business owners avoid unfair dismissal claims for many years to come? However, I know my early experience of management isn't what most managers set out to do and I deal with some fabulous business owners who are genuinely trying to protect their business interests.
After over twelve years consulting to individual businesses, including my brothers hugely successful business, Invisage IT, that he sold to Sensis (subsidiary of Telstra) at the age of 27, I decided it was time to stop re-inventing the wheel and make it possible for small businesses who don't have huge budgets to spend on HR and OHS, but really need the tools to be able to deal with staff management effectively, to have a resource they could rely on.
I had seen such great success in my clients businesses when they adopted a systems approach to managing staff that I decided to make this IP available in an online self service product - the HR Shed.
Afterall, it's crazy for everyone to be reinventing the wheel in HR and OHS in their own business. Why not take the professionally developed wheel that has been tried and tested for years in small businesses and customise it for your business. Clients have paid thousands of dollars for these same policies and procedures in their businesses and now they are available as a self service, customisable option for all small businesses.
Just as Michael Gerber in the E-Myth said that professional businesses and those that succeed are the ones with documented processes, so too I believe that small businesses with clear, robust HR and OHS policies, procedures and processes are the ones that retain their staff and manage performance well in order to achieve organisational goals.
